Short Biography

Dr. Md Monarul Islam is a young scientist, currently affiliated with Chemical Research Division (CRD), BCSIR Laboratories, Dhaka. His research is mainly focused on the development of new functional organic molecules and polymers, and the exploration of their biological activity as active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). He is interested in development of biodegradable chitosan and its water soluble derivatives for use in food industry as a natural preservative and packaging materials. He has authored or coauthored more than 23 publications. Dr. Islam graduated with an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Dhaka, an MS in Chemistry (Organic Synthesis) from the University of Dhaka, and a Ph.D in Chemistry (Advanced Organic Materials) from Saga University, Japan. He is interested to initiate science leadership program for young scientists in Bangladesh to improve research environment and motivation. He is founder convener of Young Scientists Committee, BCSIR. At present, he has been working as a Post. Doc Fellow of Talented Young Scientist Program (TYSP) at Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou supported by Ministry of Science and Technology, P R China.

  1. Synthesis of novel biological active spiro and spiroketal compounds (phase-1).
  2. Synthesis of chitin-based derivatives for pharmaceutical uses.
  3. Design and Synthesis of Pyrene-Based Dipolar Molecules.
  4. Synthesis of carbohydrate acetate composite (CAC) for use in wastewater treatment.
  5. Optimization of methods for synthesis of low molecular weight chitosan and different type of chitosan derivatives for use as natural food preservatives.
